Bike Rack FAQs

Everything you need to know about the Freedom Caravan Bike Rack range, engineered for Australian caravans and heavy e-bikes.

How we created the Freedom Caravan Bike Racks

General Compatibility & Capacity

Can the Freedom Caravan Bike Rack carry heavy e-bikes?

Yes, the Freedom Bike Rack is specifically engineered to handle heavy e-bikes up to 35kg.

We use a continuous U-section aluminum profile reinforced with two 50mm steel vertical support bars to ensure structural integrity. This design allows the rack to safely carry modern e-bikes, including those with heavy batteries and motors. For even higher weight capacities, the vertical support bars can be shortened, or you can opt for the direct mount or toolbox mount versions.

Will this bike rack fit bikes with fat tyres or wide wheels?

Yes, the rack features a 130mm wide aluminum profile channel specifically designed to accommodate fat tyres.

Whether you have a standard road bike, a mountain bike, or a modern e-bike with "fat" tyres, the wide U-channel ensures a secure fit. We also include a strap system that adjusts to various wheel sizes, ensuring stability for everything from kids' bikes to oversized off-road tyres.

Does the rack work with "moto-style" e-bike seats?

Yes, our adjustable strap system is compatible with modern motorcycle-style e-bike seats.

We noticed that many modern e-bikes feature long, moto-style seats that can be difficult to clamp with traditional racks. The Freedom rack uses a black adjustable rubber pad combined with a versatile strap system, allowing you to secure frames of unusual shapes without damaging the seat or paintwork.

Installation & Mounting Options

What mounting options are available for my caravan?

We offer four distinct mounting configurations to suit almost any caravan setup:
  • Drawbar Mount (2 or 4 Bike): Designed to clear gas bottles with an elevated "up and over" design.
  • Toolbox Mount: Bolts directly onto your caravan toolbox for a compact solution.
  • Direct Flush Mount: Ideal if you have ample clear space on your drawbar.
  • Rear Bumper Mount: The Freedom 2 can be mounted to the rear bumper if drawbar space is unavailable.

How much does the Freedom Bike Rack weigh?

The Freedom rack is designed to be lightweight, starting at just 15kg for the toolbox mount version.

To minimise the impact on your caravan's down ball (tow ball) weight, we use a structural aluminium top frame.

  • Toolbox Mount: Approx. 15kg
  • Drawbar Mount: Approx. 24kg

Even with this lightweight construction, the dual vertical support bars ensure the load is spread evenly for maximum strength.

Can I move the bike rack from my caravan to my car?

Yes, the Freedom Bike Rack is fully transferable to a vehicle.

For the ultimate freedom, you can detach the rack assembly from your caravan and attach it to our optional Car Mount Kit. This allows you to leave your caravan parked at the campsite and take your bikes with you on your vehicle to explore local trails.

Loading & Usability

Is it difficult to load heavy e-bikes onto the rack?

No, we have designed the rack for easy loading using an optional loading ramp.

You do not need to lift the full weight of the bike. The wide U-channel rail aligns perfectly with our optional loading ramp. You can simply roll the bike up the ramp—often using your e-bike's "walk mode" to power it up for you.

How do I unload the bike safely without it rolling back?

The loading ramp features a high-grip surface that allows you to use the bike's brakes to control the descent.

When unloading, you can gently apply the bike's brakes while guiding it down the ramp. The texture of the ramp provides enough friction to prevent the bike from sliding uncontrollably.

Stability & Safety

Will the bikes move or rattle while driving off-road?

No, the Freedom rack features a 5-point strapping system per bike for zero movement.

Stability over rough Australian terrain was a key design requirement. We use:

  • Two vertical steel support bars rigidly mounted to the drawbar.
  • Five separate strap points for each bike to lock them firmly in place.

This "incredibly strong" mounting system prevents the side-to-side swaying often seen in cheaper racks, ensuring your bikes and caravan remain safe on corrugated roads.
