FAQs

Product Questions

How wide can the mounting poles be apart from each other?

Our bike rack is mounted to the brackets (either tilt or offset) via U bolts. So this means you can have the vertical support bars close together (300mm) or further apart - up to 1250mm wide.

It is designed so that as the A Frame gets wider the closer you mount to the van, you will always be able to attach the u-bolts to the centre strut of the bike rack.

How do I know if it will fit my van?

We have designed our bike rack to mount with 2 vertical support bars. Helping to spread the weight of the bike rack. You only need 100mm (10cm) of free drawbar space to mount the rack to your A frame. In most situations, you can mount it over the top of gas bottles and regulators. If you are unsure, check out the fitting guide.

Also, its a big help to look at the Client Pics page. Many van set ups are unique, however these photos have been sent to us by our clients and will help you to determine the correct set up for you.

What is the rack made from?

We use aluminium and steel. The top frame is mostly alloy, to keep it light. All of the vertical support bars, mounting brackets, offset and tilt brackets are steel.

We use stainless steel bolts for rust prevention.

A big focus for us is to reduce the impact on your downball weight.

What does the rack weigh?

For Freedom 2 Bike Caravan Rack - Drawbar Mount.

When using the offset tilt bracket, the total weight is 24kg. If you opt for the standard tilt bracket, the weight is 22kg.

NOTE: if you decide to reduce the height of the vertical support bars, it will be lighter again.

Toolbox Mount: 16kg

What size bikes can it fit?

Our rack has been designed to suit all bikes. In particular, modern E-Bikes. The wide V channels cater for wheel widths of up to 120mm wide (fat wheel bikes) and with a wheel base of up to 1350mm (axle to axle)

What about bikes with no top cross bar?

Ladies bikes commonly have no top cross bar. You will need one to mount this bike rack, as it's important to secure the bike as high as possible to prevent movement.

If your bike does not have one - simply buy an aftermarket cross bar online. They are around $50 - $60 and will connect between the handlebar head stem and the seat post so your bike can be secured into the rack.

They are designed to be added/removed from bikes very quickly, so it's convenient to use.

What is the total width of the rack?

The bike rack is 1400mm wide, and 410mm deep.

Do I need to get it professionally installed or have a centre strut welded into our A Frame?

No. Our Freedom Caravan Bike Rack is very much a DIY (do it yourself) assembly. It normally takes around 15-20 minutes for the full assembly (including setting up your bikes). We have a full assembly video for you on this website.

Our bike rack bolts directly onto the A Frame with our unique mounting system. So no modification is required to be done to your van.

Where are your bike racks made?

We have a small factory on the south west coast of Victoria, in Torquay. Its here that we manufacture some items, and also test, make prototypes, and meet clients.

Recently, we moved some production to another coastal city! Yantai in China. We have been very fortunate to work with a company that has first class laser cutting, CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) metal bending, laser welding and powder coating. This extremely high tech facility allows us to make a far superior product.

We still use the DULUX Pro Texture Powder Coat system.

Can I use a bike cover?

Bike covers create a big problem for bike racks. Due to the huge amount of wind they capture when travelling at 100klm/h, (not to mention on-coming winds and trucks passing etc) the force applied to the bike rack is too great, and may cause damage to the centre tilt pole, and damage to the mount system.

If you are determined to cover the bikes, wind MUST be able to pass through the cover. A solid canvas style non venting cover will void your warranty.

Can I mount your rack on the rear of my caravan?

100% yes. Whilst you will get more bounce on the rear than the front A Frame, many clients have done this.

Normally the offset bracket is required to move the bike rack away from the rear panel. Also, rotating the handlebar of the bike closest to the van can also help to prevent the bikes hitting the rear wall if space is tight for you.

You may also need to speak with the caravan manufacturer to see if your rear bumper is strong enough.

Check out our clients pick page. Some clever clients have sat the bike rack just above the spare tyre and put a small spacer between the tyre and the rack to create extra stability. CLIENTS PICS
